"The Kentucky Department of Education couldn’t support such a change either, said spokeswoman Lisa Gross.
“It would be difficult for us to support cutting the number of instructional days in the school year given Kentucky has one of the shortest school years in the country,” she said. “It would be much more effective to work with schools which are perhaps not using their time at the end of the year efficiently to do so.”
In the past, the Democratic controlled House has been a staunch supporter of the Kentucky Education Reform Act of 1990 which required the accountability testing, said newly elected House Speaker Greg Stumbo, D-Prestonsburg. He said, however, it’s time to evaluate KERA after 20 years and “everything is on the table,” including the number of school days.
“I’ve never thought there was any magic in the number of days in a school year,” Stumbo said."
There is MAGIC in just attending school.
In this nation, the average number of school days is 180. Most kids go to school 196 days. In Kentucky, we have "187 days (includes 177 days of instruction; 4 days of professional development; 4 holidays; 2 planning days)" (http://www.education.ky.gov/KDE/HomePageRepository/News%20Room/Kentucky%20Education%20Facts.htm)
So if you linked to the "Educators oppose House..." then you get that EDUCATION matters to all of us. My children are not statistics. Their friends need to be in school, getting an education that will prepare them for an ever changing future. They need to be in school, especially if you don't want them to drop out, especially if you want them to attend commencement, as our President does. The White House and the U.S. Department of Education have announced a new Race to the Top High School Commencement Challenge and are inviting public schools across the country to compete to have President Obama speak at their graduation: "This is your opportunity to show me why your school exemplifies the best that our education system has to offer." At the beginning of the school year, Obama encouraged students across the country to take responsibility for their education, study hard and graduate from high school. This challenge encourages schools to show how they are making great strides on personal responsibility, academic excellence and college readiness.
Even our First Lady, Judy Beshear, is organizing Drop Out Prevention Summits across the Commonwealth. What message are we sending our children: education matters....but money matters more? So instead of 177 instructional days, we get 175. Then what? Doesn't it become easier and easier to cut another day here, and another one there...until you have...nothing. So all the pre-k initiatives, the drop out at 18, all of it what, doesn't matter? Does all that become irrelevant? To me, by cutting even two days, our government is saying that my children don't matter. That their classmates don't matter. That their teachers and their schools don't matter. That educating them doesn't matter. That SB1 and Core Content Standards don't matter. That it was all talk and no real, positive action.
As PTAs we struggle to gain parent involvement, we help supplement already cut to the bone school budgets with our fundraisers, we advocate for positive change, asking how we can be part of the solution, and now? Well, I'll just tell my son Seth who went with me to Frankfort yesterday, to be part of that dialogue, that his presence was just nullified by this proposal. That he'll get two extra days this summer, and maybe the next one after that, until all he has left is his own determination to go to college and make a difference, that we'll supplement those two days ourselves because it is apparent that Rep. Stumbo doesn't think he's worth a solid educational foundation.
